They bring their wine and bowls of chilli through to the living room, where another large tree throws off its evocative scent and the fire crackles away. They sit on the thick white rug, backs against the sofa, leaning into each other. The fire casts out a wonderful heat, and the chilli is excellent. Jack has his arm around her and eats his food with a fork, the bowl balanced on his thighs. Marge pads silently into the room and lowers herself down so her enormous head is across Emmy’s shins, before shifting contentedly and emitting a deep sigh. Emmy giggles.

‘She’s such a traitor,’ Jack says. ‘She’s given me zero attention at work since you came on the scene. You’ve really got a fan there.’

‘She’s gorgeous.’ She reaches forward and pats her head, enjoying Marge’s weight on her. ‘I’m getting very attached to her, but I’m sure she’s just here for the chilli.’

‘That too,’ says Jack. ‘Make sure she doesn’t get any—that’s one mess I don’t want to have to clear up in the morning.’

When they’ve finished eating, he puts their bowls on the coffee table. Emmy rubs the rug with her socked toe.

‘This is the most amazing rug,’ she says. ‘It’s so thick and soft; it’s like a bed.’

‘Mmm,’ Jack says. ‘We can put it to the test, if you’re game.’

She jerks her head up to look at him; his eyes are dark and his face is serious as he slides his fingers inside the neck of her sweater and strokes her collarbone, back and forth. His expression makes her stomach flip. She came over here bearing hopes she didn’t dare articulate to herself, but now she knows exactly what’s going to happen. Her gaze darts to the door. ‘Is anyone else in the house?’ she asks.

‘Only Marge,’ Jack says, ‘and she can’t see a thing. But still—I’ll take her out to the kitchen.’ He hauls himself up and grabs their bowls. ‘Come on, old thing; that’s my girl.’

She watches the fire, the thrill of anticipation creeping over her skin. He’s back a few minutes later, switching off the chandelier overhead. The room is dim, lit only by the fire and the soft fairy lights on the Christmas tree. He sits down on the rug beside her and strokes her cheek, gazing at her as though he can’t quite believe she’s real. Then he hooks the back of her neck and pulls her towards him and she’s lost in him. He’s beguilingly novel and blessedly familiar all at once. She swings a leg over and straddles him. Within a couple of minutes, he’s tugging at her sweater and off it comes over her head.

‘I didn’t exactly dress for this,’ she manages, some part of her brain registering that she’s wearing old, greying M&S underwear and definitely hasn’t shaved her legs since the party. She’s also full of chilli and Pringles; she mustn’t be too athletic or she’ll get a stitch.

‘It’s not your clothes I’m interested in,’ he murmurs. ‘And you could argue I haven’t dressed for seduction either.
